Holiday vs observed day vs optional day
- Holiday
- A day off set by law. In Brazil and Portugal it stays on its date, even on a weekend.
- Observed day
- The US rule: when a federal holiday falls on a Saturday, the day off is the Friday before; on a Sunday, the Monday after. The legal date does not change.
- Ponto facultativo
- Brazil's optional day: the government releases its own staff (Carnival, Corpus Christi). Private employers are not bound.
- Optional holiday
- Portugal's Carnival Tuesday and municipal holiday: they apply when the employment contract or collective agreement provides for them.
State and municipal holidays are not subtracted in the business-day counts on these pages. Each page says what was left out.

- What is the difference between a holiday and an observed holiday?
- The holiday is the legal date. The observed holiday is the day off when that date falls on a weekend: in the US, Saturday holidays are observed on Friday and Sunday holidays on Monday. Brazil and Portugal do not move holidays.
- Which country has more public holidays: Brazil, the US or Portugal?
- Portugal, with 13 mandatory holidays, then the United States with 11 federal holidays and Brazil with 10 national holidays. In Brazil, optional days and municipal holidays add to the real number of days off.
- What is a ponto facultativo in Brazil?
- A day the federal government releases its own employees, such as Carnival Monday and Tuesday or Corpus Christi. It is not a holiday: private employers decide for themselves.
- Do these lists include state and municipal holidays?
