Frequently asked questions

How does the syllable counter work?

The counter uses a heuristic algorithm that groups vowel sounds in each word, accounting for silent e endings and common English phonetic patterns. It achieves around 90% accuracy for everyday English words.

What is a syllable?

A syllable is a unit of sound that forms a word or part of a word, built around a vowel sound. For example, 'cat' has 1 syllable, 'butter' has 2 (but·ter), and 'beautiful' has 3 (beau·ti·ful).

What is a haiku?

A haiku is a traditional Japanese poetry form with exactly 3 lines. The first line has 5 syllables, the second has 7, and the third has 5. Enter a 3-line poem to check if it follows the 5-7-5 pattern.

Does this work for languages other than English?

The algorithm is optimized for English. It may give rough estimates for other Latin-script languages, but accuracy will be lower because vowel-consonant patterns differ significantly across languages.
