How to choose and use these tools

  1. Inspect the original text before removing whitespace or line breaks. Line boundaries may represent records that need to stay separate.
  2. For lists, normalize whitespace and case only when those differences do not matter, remove duplicate lines, then sort.
  3. Convert the cleaned list to its destination format and compare it with the original. Count characters again before pasting into a limited field.

Worked example

A list containing apple, banana and apple on separate lines becomes apple and banana after removing duplicates. Apple and apple may remain distinct when matching is case-sensitive; decide before changing capitalization.

Frequently asked questions

Should I remove duplicates before or after changing case?

If capitalization is meaningful, preserve it and compare exact lines. If it is not, normalize case before deduplicating. Keep a copy of the original because normalization can discard information.

Are words and characters counted the same way everywhere?

No. Word boundaries, emoji, combined accents and line endings can be counted differently by platforms. Use the counter as a drafting aid and check the destination field for its actual limit.
